Elders

The Bible teaches that every local congregation should be under the oversight of a group of elders (Acts 14:13 and Titus 1:5).

The purpose of the elders in the church is to provide leadership and to protect the church from false teachings.  The apostle Paul advised the Elders of Ephesus in this way, "Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.  I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them."  (Acts 20:28-30)

The qualifications of an elder are given by Paul in Titus 1:7-9. "For the overseer must be above reproach as God's steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain, but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict."

The church of Christ in Salem is blessed with four men who meet these qualifications and who have chosen to serve in this capacity at this time.

Deacons

The Bible also teaches that deacons should be appointed to serve the church.

The apostle Paul also spoke of their qualifications in 1 Timothy 3:8-12.  "Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to much wine or fond of sordid gain, but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. These men must also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach... Deacons must be husbands of only one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households."

The church of Christ in Salem is blessed with two men who meet these qualifications and who have chosen to serve in this capacity.
